RESPOND project launches a Community of Practice
2nd July 2009
On June 23rd, the RESPOND project and USAID launched the Long Acting and Permanent Methods (LA/PM) Community of Practice (CoP) as an on-going forum for knowledge sharing, coordination, and resource development related to long-acting and permanent methods of contraception. The launch was attended by 70 representatives from a wide range of organizations, including USAID, foundations, professional and pharmaceutical organizations, and cooperating agencies. The purpose of the event was to share the latest global data on the status of LA/PMs as well as information about partner organization´s current LA/PM work. The meeting also included a technical update on contraceptive implants and announced plans to develop a virtual implants toolkit.
Participants identified a range of issues for potential exploration by the CoP, including adequately addressing cost and contraceptive supply requirements, linking latent and existing demand for contraception with services, and identifying approaches that support the scale-up and sustainability of service provision.
