Generics stand to win as buyers pursue different procurement policies
21st August 2015
This week at the RHSC’s “Procurers’ and Manufacturers’ Summit”, USAID and UNFPA agreed to disagree when it comes to buying injectable contraceptives. For its part, USAID said it would continue limiting procurement to suppliers that “bundled” the drug with requisite needles and disposal or “sharps” boxes. UNFPA also chose to maintain its policy, albeit contrary to USAID’s. Pointing to the challenges that such a requirement presents, especially to smaller generic manufacturers—and the possibility it might even discourage them from pursuing WHO Prequalification—UNFPA committed instead to procuring and selling ancillary supplies separately via AccessRH.
