Depo-Provera recall and shipping delays
12th February 2010
Pfizer has issued a voluntary recall on specific batches of Depo-Provera received by USAID and several other suppliers between October 2009 and January 2010. The affected Depo-Provera is NOT deemed dangerous to consumers, however, there is some concern regarding a potential compromise of sterility assurance. Information on the specific batches recalled can be found in this letter from Pfizer.
Orders that are pending shipment have also been recalled and will be subsequently destroyed. As a result, donors anticipate significant shipment delays with upcoming orders. Given current demand and estimated production schedules, regular shipping schedules may not return for the next 6-9 months.
The recall of Depo-Provera and temporary halt in production will result in worldwide shortages of Depo. Resupply will not begin earlier than March 2010.
