Concept Foundation introduces Medabon®
1st September 2009
Improving access to safe abortion services remains a public health imperative. A new product, Medabon®, is being made available through Concept Foundation, an international nongovernmental organization based in Bangkok, Thailand, to provide women with a more affordable and convenient option for medical abortion. The product combines two widely used medicines, mifepristone and misoprostol, in a single blister pack for the first time. Concept is working to register and introduce Medabon® in nearly 30 lower- and middle-income countries in the next two years.
Concept Foundation, Ipas, and PATH have developed an information package as a guide for health care providers and program managers working to introduce Medabon® in their local contexts. Developed with support from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, Medabon® for Medical Abortion: Resource Materials for Health Care Providers and Program Managers includes:
- Medical and Service Delivery Guidelines.
- Medical Guidelines for Providers of Emergency Care.
- What You Need to Know (sample brochure for women).
- Key Talking Points.
- Frequently Asked Questions.
- Selected References.
- Selected Illustrations for Low-literacy Audiences.
- Adapting Medabon® Materials for Local Use.
- A Framework for Introduction
We hope that you will find these materials useful in your work. They can be downloaded at www.medabon.info, and printed copies can be requested by contacting the Concept Foundation at medabon@conceptfoundation.org.
