Access depends on functional SCM systems

Simply making commodities available is not enough to improve the quality of life for most communities, argues Dr. Lloyd Matowe, the executive director of Pharmaceutical Systems Africa, an international consultancy supporting developing countries to strengthen their supply chains. In an online blog post, Dr. Matowe maintains that access must be tied to functional supply chain management systems, which enable efficient procurement, distribution, and rational use of life-saving medicines. “The challenges in supply chain systems are not limited to medical stores: on the contrary. In most countries, supply chain management systems continue to lack the requisite human resources … rely(ing) on inadequately trained or qualified personnel to carry out core duties in managing medicines and related commodities.” While calling for a paradigm shift, Dr. Matowe acknowledged the presence of strong global advocacy for supply chain efficiency, mentioning in particular People that Deliver and the Reproductive Health Supplies Coalition.
