RH supplies in humanitarian settings: What can we learn from 10+ y. of global coordination for routine FP supplies?

06/06/2018

What can we do when the most popular contraceptive method runs out in a crisis-affected setting, where access to SRH services is already diminished? Can we move extra life-saving products from one country where they are not needed, to another country where they are desperately needed? How do we allocate limited RH emergency supplies across countries in an equitable way?

Similar questions have been at the heart of the 10+ years of work implemented by the Reproductive Health Supplies Coalition’s (RHSC) System Strengthening Working Group (SSWG) to strengthen global coordination across the major procurers for improved family planning product availability. Although the RHSC mechanisms were built to address stock imbalances that may arise for routine family planning products, the experience from this cross-organizational and cross-country work can be instructive for humanitarian partners and other groups.
