Lancet article estimates impact of US funding cuts
25th September 2025
A newly published Lancet Global Health article, spearheaded by Avenir Health with inputs from a wide range of health data experts, estimates the impact of the January 2025 US government funding cuts on four health areas that have been received substantial US foreign assistance: HIV, tuberculosis, family planning, and maternal and child health. A complete cessation of US funding without replacement by other sources would lead to 40–55 million additional unplanned pregnancies and 12–16 million unsafe abortions across 51 countries, and 2·5 million (1·3–4·5) additional child deaths from causes other than HIV and tuberculosis across 24 countries. Data from the VAN and RHViz supported this work, and the team of co-authors includes RHSC’s Director of Data and Digital Transformation Julia White and Alexis Heaton, Data and Process Improvement Senior Manager. The article can be found here: Effects of reductions in US foreign assistance on HIV, tuberculosis, family planning, and maternal and child health: a modelling study.
