Tenth Meeting, London 2009

Tenth meeting

On June 4th and 5th, 130 participants from around the world assembled in London for the Tenth Membership Meeting of the Reproductive Health Supply Coalition. Hosted by the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID), with support from IPPF and Marie Stopes International, the meeting capped a week’s worth of events, including gatherings by the Coalition’s three Working Groups, the Caucus on New and Underused RH Technologies, the Coalition’s Executive Committee, and the AccessRH management team. On the eve of the membership meeting, guests were hosted to a reception where IPPF unveiled its new publication, Contraception at a Crossroads. The meeting also marked a transition in the Coalition’s leadership, with Julia Bunting, Team Leader for AIDS and Reproductive Health at DFID assuming the post of Chair. She replaced Dr. Wolfgang Bichmann of the KfW Development Bank who had held the post since 2006.

The membership meeting was structured around four broad themes: the implications of the downturn in the global economy and the advent of new political changes in the US; the emergence of new strategic partnerships at country-level; recent advances in key Coalition workstreams; and a review of best practices to ensure commodity security amidst new development funding modalities. Given the size of the gathering, the meeting introduced a host of new presentational formats including simultaneous break-out sessions; moderated panel discussions; and parallel presentations by Working Group leaders.
