New WHO Report on the Selection and Use of Essential Medicines

12th May 2015

The WHO has just released the report of the 20th Expert Committee on the Selection and Use of Essential Medicines. The Expert Committee recommended the addition of three new contraceptive products to the Model Essential Medicines List (EML): the etonogestrel-releasing implant, the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system and the progesterone contraceptive vaginal ring. This is great news as it will help expand access to new and underutilized contraceptive products. In addition the Committee recommended that misoprostol be listed on the EML for the additional indication of treating PPH, when oxytocin is not available or cannot be used safely. This development will help to expand the range of available options to treat PPH.
