AccessRH is an innovative procurement mechanism that aims to:
To ensure long-term sustainability, stability, and reliability of service, the Procurement Services Branch (PSB) of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) will implement AccessRH as an integrated part of its structure. UNFPA will continue to offer its traditional procurement services for contraceptive products and other reproductive health (RH) commodities.
AccessRH is a new way to manage procurement, information, and inventory. Ultimately, clients will be able to order products online at prices negotiated by UNFPA, for delivery around the world. It will be open to purchasers including, but not limited to, non-governmental organizations, social marketing organizations, and Ministries of Health.
To improve availability of quality standard products and enable lead time reductions under AccessRH, UNFPA will manage an inventory of standard reproductive health products dedicated for AccessRH clients. Once in place, UNFPA will ship orders either from stock held on its behalf by pre-qualified suppliers or directly from a supplier’s production line. AccessRH will focus on improved demand planning and work closely with suppliers to smooth order and production volatility.
AccessRH will also incorporate the RHInterchange, which provides a wide variety of users with accurate, up-to-date information on contraceptive orders and shipments for more than 100 countries.
AccessRH officially began in mid-February 2010, and is expected to open to its first clients in late 2010. To pilot the new AccessRH processes and tools in the first year; one product, standard 53mm male condoms, will be offered. Following a successful launch, AccessRH aims to offer an expanded menu of standard products.
AccessRH was developed under the auspices of the Reproductive Health Supplies Coalition and is currently being funded by the European Union, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and UNFPA itself. An Advisory Board for the initiative is being assembled.
A review of AccessRH’s activities and performance metrics will enable the operator and its Advisory Board to explore further innovations or the addition of other product categories.
