Starpharma, Durex in co-development deal

16th October 2007

Pharmaceutical developer Starpharma Holdings Ltd and SSL International plc, which owns the Durex condom brand, have signed a deal to develop condoms coated with Starpharma's VivaGel product. VivaGel is a vaginal microbicide designed to prevent sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV and genital herpes. SSL is the world's largest maker of condoms, with about 30 per cent of the global market for branded condoms.

A commercial licence will be negotiated under the agreement.
Undisclosed fees are payable to Starpharma under the deal, which also provides for the start of regulatory and market development activities by the two parties. "We are delighted to be working with SSL, whom we believe will be an excellent co-development partner for VivaGel as a condom coating," Starpharma chief executive Jackie Fairley said.

Dr Fairley said Starpharma's development and commercialisation activities for VivaGel were gathering pace. The deal with SSL was the second condom-coating agreement signed by Starpharma in the last three months.
Starpharma shares were six cents higher at 42 cents on Tuesday.
